One killed, one injured after hit-and-run cycle crash

Tuesday, July 4, 2006

Police are hunting for a hit-and-run driver involved in a motorcycle crash that left a 20-year-old South Holland man dead and his girlfriend in critical condition.

Cardon Harris, of the 1200 block of King Drive, died Sunday night after he swerved to avoid a car that cut him off as he traveled north on South Stony Island Avenue at 60th Street and hit a pole, authorities said.

His girlfriend of 5½ years, Jatorie Hudson, remained in a critical condition with head injuries at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Monday after she was thrown from the seat of his Suzuki GSXR600 motorcycle.

Harris, a Thornwood High School graduate and former running back, had been riding within the speed limit with nine other motorcyclists when a small blue car, possibly a Toyota Corolla or Dodge Neon driven by a woman, suddenly jerked in front of him without signaling just after 8 p.m., friends said.

The driver drove through at least two red lights as he or she sped from the scene and was chased by friends of Harris, one of the motorcyclists said.

The car was later found, but the motorist remains at large, a police source said.

Harris was declared dead within an hour at University of Chicago Hospitals, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Harris' mother, Jacqueline Luckett, said her son had been riding motorcycles for four years and was a skilled and careful rider who was wearing a helmet and protective jacket when he crashed, although Hudson was without a helmet.

Harris was working for the Chicago Housing Authority during the summer break and was due to celebrate his 21st birthday on July 15, she said. His Suzuki was a birthday present.

"He was a perfect son in his final year at Northern Illinois University," she said.

"He was studying science but maybe planned to switch his major to business."

Harris' father, Carl, added, "He was an A-B student, and he was about to graduate on time.

"He was so kind and would do anything to help anyone."

Jewelry Harris was wearing at the time of the crash was missing, he said.

Chicago police are investigating but have made no arrests, police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor said.
